Art Affair Kyotoは京都の藤井大丸ブラックストレージをメイン会場としたアートフェアです。

多くのアートフェアは、マーケットの構造の中で作家や作品、ギャラリーを紹介する場として機能しています。しかし、アートの世界にはマーケットの論理から少し距離を置き、自らの問いに従って表現を掘り下げていく作家たちが存在します。

歴史を振り返れば、新しい芸術の言語や価値観は、しばしばそのような独立した実践の中から生まれてきました。1960年代のミニマルアートやコンセプチュアルアート、近年のスペキュラティブデザインやリサーチベースド・アートも、その系譜の中に位置づけることができるでしょう。資本や市場から完全に自由になることはできません。それでも、その外側へ向かおうとする意志の中には、社会や文化をゆっくりと更新していく力があると信じています。

ここに集まる作家の多くは、特定のギャラリーに所属せず、世界各地のArtist in Residence、大学や研究機関、地域のコミュニティなど、多様な場と横断的につながりながら、それぞれの問いを作品として立ち上げています。このフェアは、作品を売る場であると同時に、そうした表現が持続していくためのエコシステムをどのように育てていけるのかを考える試みでもあります。

京都は、長い時間の中で表現技術の革新を積み重ねながら文化を育ててきた街です。伝統と実験が静かに重なり合うこの場所から、まだ形になりきっていない表現や思想が世界へ広がっていく瞬間は、すぐそこまで来ています。Art Affair Kyotoが、その小さな起点となることを願っています。

Many art fairs operate within the market, presenting artists, artworks, and galleries.
Yet some artists choose to work at a distance from these structures, following their own inquiries and developing their practices independently.
Throughout history, new artistic languages have often emerged from such positions—seen in movements like Minimal Art, Conceptual Art, and more recently, speculative design and research-based art.
While no practice can be entirely free from the market, the impulse to move beyond it holds the potential to gradually reshape culture and society.
Many of the artists in this fair are not tied to specific galleries.
They work across residencies, academic institutions, and local communities, forming connections that extend beyond conventional frameworks.
This fair is both a marketplace and an experiment—an attempt to imagine how such practices can be sustained.
Kyoto, where tradition and experimentation quietly intersect, offers a fitting ground for this exploration.
Art Affair Kyoto hopes to serve as a small point of departure for what is yet to emerge.
